furniture fix: how to dress a brown sofa

LIFE_OXFORD_VAMP_MOLLY_R300

A friend of mine recently told me she was at a loss when it came to decorating around her brown leather sofa. She had tried adding turquoise accessories but admitted that it felt a little expected (I have to agree with her there). Here are a few ideas to ensure your brown couch – be it leather or upholstered – is used successfully in your space and plays well with your other pieces.

a tour of tlc headquarters – my humble home!

Screen Shot 2013-08-10 at 3.41.27 PM

I did a bit of a clean up on Saturday and thought it might be a good opportunity to show you inside my home. After all, the cats were behaving, the sun was shining and I was busy killing time trying to avoid doing homework for my course (procrastination is something I’ve become very skilled at). So here you go, Creatives, it’s not the stuff magazines are made of – but nobody lives in the magazines anyway – so take a squiz and let me know what you think.

so I just discovered koskela (omfg!)

Screen Shot 2013-08-03 at 2.09.11 PM

I must start this post with an apology; Koskela, I’m sorry it took me so long to discover you. However, now that I’ve experienced the magic of your store, I’m declaring my love for you and intend to serenade you with that John Mayer song, Your Body is a Wonderland. Because, truly, that’s how I feel after having walked around the space last weekend. Creatives, have a medic on standby for this store tour. It’s colourful, it’s quirky and it’s a whole lotta lovely!

real rooms: amber stapff’s lovely living room

413A3171 copy

I think I need to rename Real Rooms to ‘Rooms that Make me Weep with Joy’. This latest instalment, which belongs to graphic designer Amber Stapff, is a white wonderland with a minimalistic and calming vibe. You can totally see the designer at play in this space. And I have to admit, it’s making me question my love of colour (please do not tell colour I said that!).

real rooms: lani kirpichnikov’s holiday home

home - Version 2

I half wanted to smile and half wanted to cry when I saw this photo hit my inbox. Smile because this Real Room from Lani Kirpichnikov is utterly, utterly stunning – and cry because I am so filled with jealousy right now (as I sit with my bar heater on) that I’m practically ready to release my own cologne, TLC: Envy. Just look at this fiery phenomenon; it’s amazing!

my ikea winter living room makeover

P1130004

When the team at IKEA contacted me to take part in their blogger challenge – where you’re given $200 to add some winter warmth to your space – it was less of a challenge and more of an all-stops train to Blissville. I’ve been an IKEA addict since birth (my first word was Karlskrona), so adding more of their wares to my existing collection was a glorious experience indeed.

how to achieve a hamptons inspired home

federall1

I first came to appreciate the subdued sophistication of a Hamptons-inspired interior when I tuned into The Real Housewives of New York City five seasons ago (don’t judge me!) and saw those wealthy women at their holiday houses. The laidback look of this home decor style really appeals to me, along with the crisp and clean feeling it embodies. So, how does one achieve the look? Let’s explore it shall we?

this week’s top seven creative finds

P1110626

1 | You may call it a rusty old bird cage, but I call this beauty – that I snapped at Halchemy Design in Newtown – the things vintage dreams are made of. I absolutely adore this sort of vibe and would love to pop a few giant candles in this gem for a splash of old-world-meets-new. The little bird they’ve perched inside just caps off this piece wonderfully, as does the subtle blue tones that are peeking through the rust. Are you a fan?

achieve a coastal vibe – no sand required!

Achieving a coastal vibe is all about the right tone and texture

I have to be honest with you, Creatives; I have been into homes where I have seen things I cannot un-see. You know, sand in bottles, shells in jars, Gone Fishin’ signs; all of the things that people thought you needed to create a coastal vibe. Thankfully, design therapy has taught me that you don’t have to be so literal with your decor. If you’re looking to channel a coastal vibe, it’s simply a matter of using tone and texture – with a little accessorising – no sand in sight!

things i’ve learnt about stylist emma blomfield

Emma 029s cropped

Self-confessed design nerd Emma Blomfield works not only as a stylist for her own company, Nest Designs, but as a homewares buyer too. “I see all the products before they are released to the stores, so I can see what trends are coming out”. Jealousy alert! I caught up with this very talented lady – and put my envy aside for just a moment – to learn more about her work, home style and the trends that make her heart race the most.
