For Nicole Elliott & Sarah Hargrave – the founders of design business Ginger Elliott – finding unique furniture pieces to upcycle is a giddy experience. “Quite often we turn heads, as we can’t contain ourselves with excitement,” they tell me. “The thrill of finding the piece starts the creative process”. And what a process it is. Just looking at some of their creations is giving me heart palpitations (in the best way possible!).

top notch textiles from a local creative

Screen Shot 2013-08-19 at 3.41.57 PM

I do love me a soft furnishing (guilty as charged), so I was rather delighted when I discovered local Creative Shakira Lima during my online travels. Her store, Shakiraaz – a celebration of handcrafted and Indian-inspired gems – was established in 2011 after she spent a few years prior developing and creating products out of her Melbourne home.

industrial framing and furniture – I’m there!

Screen Shot 2013-08-11 at 11.00.41 AM

Perhaps it’s stating the obvious to admit that I’m a bit in love with rustic and industrial furniture. But to know that it’s crafted by a local family who’ve spent the past 20 years building it from its humble beginnings in a backyard shed into something spectacular, is altogether more warm and fuzzy! This is the story of Mulbury; an Aussie homewares and furniture business that not only makes breathtaking pieces, but does it with heart. I sat down with manager Ryan Melder to find out more about this rustic treasure trove.

why i’m smitten with design biz visual imprint

Screen Shot 2013-08-09 at 9.56.57 PM

It was a wake-up call moment following the 2009 Black Saturday Bushfires that led to partners Suzi Kerr and Denis Spooner creating their design business, Visual Imprint. “You realise that life can be cut short at any moment,” Suzi tells me. “Best to spend our time on this planet doing something you really enjoy”. That event, along with Suzi’s love for interior decor and Denis’ passion for printing, spawned a creative journey the two are now enjoying immense success on.

this week’s top seven creative finds

1 | Etsy is like that rabbit hole in Alice in Wonderland; it’s a whole world of amazing that I don’t want to come back from. I came across the wondrous Camp Koodle this week and had this frame made for me by founder and creative Katie Koodle. It was a gift for my Mother-in-Law and it was very well received indeed. Contact Katie and have your own made up or take a look at her other marvellous creations over in her store.

Screen Shot 2013-08-03 at 2.09.11 PM

I must start this post with an apology; Koskela, I’m sorry it took me so long to discover you. However, now that I’ve experienced the magic of your store, I’m declaring my love for you and intend to serenade you with that John Mayer song, Your Body is a Wonderland. Because, truly, that’s how I feel after having walked around the space last weekend. Creatives, have a medic on standby for this store tour. It’s colourful, it’s quirky and it’s a whole lotta lovely!

this week’s top seven creative finds

1 | I love a local set of Creatives making some uniquely Aussie products and the team from Kitchen Ink have not disappointed this week. Get a load of my brand new Mr & Mr pillow case set in all its black and white glory. It’s playing particularly well with my polka dot bedspread and you’ll notice little Oswald there having the time of this life too. They’re also available in Mrs & Mrs and Mr and Mrs sets – too good!

tlc at the east is east night markets

Screen Shot 2013-07-25 at 10.12.48 PM

I love to bag a bargain. And when there’s a local, handmade find in the mix, I’m like a kid in a candy store. This past Thursday night I hit my kind of lolly shop – the East is East Night Markets at the Tap Gallery in Darlinghurst. What I uncovered on my adventure was a stack of local Creatives who’ve made some fabulous homewares and accessories (some of which you’ve seen on the blog before). On with my photo diary from this very fabulous evening!

review: abigail ahern’s decorating with style

P1120941

Alert the presses, Creatives; I have been converted! Once a lover of all things light and bright in interiors (you know, sunshine and lollipops, a place where it’s always spring), this release from style maven Abigail Ahern has given me a wondrous appreciate of interiors with mood. The pictures within this release are somewhat dark, very alluring and quite unlike anything I’ve  laid eyes upon in an interiors book (and you know I have many).

a chat with interiors legend shaynna blaze

Shaynna-Blaze-Blank-Canvas

I first developed my crush on Shaynna Blaze way back on season one of Selling Houses Australia. What’s not to love about an Aussie who shares achievable design tips while transforming rooms for needy home owners (and often lending them a shoulder to cry on when they don’t want to hide their soft toy collection)? I was delighted that this gal-on-the-go, who most recently added The Block to her CV, took five to answer my questions on everything from life before TV, being a role model and writing her first book.
