real room: jenna bain’s quirk-filled living space

home15

I love an all-stops train to Quirk-ville and this week’s Real Room is just that; an eclectic living space that embraces interesting art and casual furniture while giving a generous nod to craftiness. It’s the home of Canberra Creative Jenna Bain, who like me admits to finding editing a challenge in her home when it’s filled with so many much-loved pieces. She also admits that not everything in her space matches perfectly, which I think is what makes this room so good!

real room: cathy elsmore’s lovely living room

Cathy Elsmore-6

You all responded so well to Cathy Elsmore’s glorious before-and-after boudoir that I had to do a bit of a back-by-popular-demand scenario and show you another room in her home. This time around, I’m showcasing her lovely living room, which sports an on-trend black, yellow and white colour palette and is filled with my favourite things – cushions! Read on for more photos and Cathy’s vision for the room.

creative finds reloaded: my 10 fave discoveries

p1120280

1 | I went gaga for these washi tape candles from The Tealight Co earlier in the year. Sometimes the simplest ideas are the nicest ones and putting six glorious washi tape designs on tealights is a perfect example of this. The black snowflake tape was my fave back then and still is now. I got these through Superking Australia (and you can too).

must-have rugs: chevron, stripes and diamonds

20130913_TW_FabHabitat2087

Rugs are the new cushions if you ask me; they’re so affordable nowadays that you can swap them around at a moment’s notice when you tire of your old one (unlike when they swapped old Pippa for new Pippa on Home and Away – that was just too big a change for me to handle). The added bonus with smaller, lightweight rugs like the ones above is that you can layer them for a relaxed and casual vibe that still packs a visual punch (and you can score them at a discounted price – read on!)

hanging out with temple & webster at better homes & gardens live

Screen Shot 2013-09-23 at 6.51.48 PM

The weekend gone by was a busy one, but I managed to squeeze in a quick dash to Better Homes & Gardens Live to see my fave peeps from Temple & Webster. The T&W team have been great supporters of the blog from the moment it started, letting me pop to their HQ a few times to look-in on shoots and more. Needless to say, the T&W stand was by far the standout from the event.

i’m smitten with the kikki.K karneval collection

Screen Shot 2013-09-06 at 11.54.14 AM

Confession time: clowns scare the absolutely bejeezus outta me. Thankfully, this gorgeous circus-inspired range from kikki.K, called Karenval, is all fun and no face paint! It’s colourful and cute – and has landed just in time for Spring. As you can see from the shots in this post, it teams so well with florals and bright whites; it’s incredibly happy and not just for kids!

hue how-to: break the rules and mix colour

Shot_5_tif_86518

Rules are such a snooze. You know, blue and green should never be seen and all that jazz. Sure, the colour wheel does dictate that certain hues are complimentary while others are not ideal together, but there are ways you can ignore these rules when it comes to home decor. It can all work wonderfully if you keep a few simple concepts (not rules) in mind. Let me get on my tutorial glasses for this educational experience.

my interview with belle’s neale whitaker

Screen Shot 2013-09-03 at 10.00.07 AM

As Editor-in-Chief at Belle, Neale Whitaker is at the forefront of what’s hot in interior design. And although he has witnessed thousands of homes grace the pages of the popular mag, he admitted in a recent issue that not every home is to his taste. “…that was a controversial thing to say,” he tells me. I caught up with this industry heavyweight and The Block judge to discuss the magazine, his decor secret shame and his take on Christmas decorating.

review: 100 ways to happy chic your life

P1120960

If my mother told me tomorrow that I was adopted, I think I’d book a redeye flight to New York to declare myself Jonathan Adler‘s brother. We seem to share the same adoration of colour, a love of quirk, a fondness of humour and a partiality to a scatter cushion or seven. It’s in his latest release – 100 Ways to Happy Chic Your Life – he cements himself as my ultimate go-to guy for out-of-the-box home decor inspiration. So, we may not be brothers, but we are at the very least cut from the same cross-stitch!
