real room: jenna bain’s quirk-filled living space

home15

I love an all-stops train to Quirk-ville and this week’s Real Room is just that; an eclectic living space that embraces interesting art and casual furniture while giving a generous nod to craftiness. It’s the home of Canberra Creative Jenna Bain, who like me admits to finding editing a challenge in her home when it’s filled with so many much-loved pieces. She also admits that not everything in her space matches perfectly, which I think is what makes this room so good!

real room: cathy elsmore’s lovely living room

Cathy Elsmore-6

You all responded so well to Cathy Elsmore’s glorious before-and-after boudoir that I had to do a bit of a back-by-popular-demand scenario and show you another room in her home. This time around, I’m showcasing her lovely living room, which sports an on-trend black, yellow and white colour palette and is filled with my favourite things – cushions! Read on for more photos and Cathy’s vision for the room.

my homewares adventure in lovely lane cove

Screen Shot 2013-09-24 at 1.24.38 PM

I love nothing more than connecting with local Creatives, so I was beyond chuffed when In the Cove‘s Jacky Barker invited me for a tour of the most marvellous homewares stores Lane Cove has to offer. In the space of a few hours we managed to squeeze in many gasp-worthy moments across three great stores – each of which was uniquely different from the other!

must-have rugs: chevron, stripes and diamonds

20130913_TW_FabHabitat2087

Rugs are the new cushions if you ask me; they’re so affordable nowadays that you can swap them around at a moment’s notice when you tire of your old one (unlike when they swapped old Pippa for new Pippa on Home and Away – that was just too big a change for me to handle). The added bonus with smaller, lightweight rugs like the ones above is that you can layer them for a relaxed and casual vibe that still packs a visual punch (and you can score them at a discounted price – read on!)

hanging out with temple & webster at better homes & gardens live

Screen Shot 2013-09-23 at 6.51.48 PM

The weekend gone by was a busy one, but I managed to squeeze in a quick dash to Better Homes & Gardens Live to see my fave peeps from Temple & Webster. The T&W team have been great supporters of the blog from the moment it started, letting me pop to their HQ a few times to look-in on shoots and more. Needless to say, the T&W stand was by far the standout from the event.

real room: sam’s dreamy open plan home

Screen Shot 2013-09-16 at 4.06.39 PM

I love open plan living and the dividing up of a space into zones using furniture. This week’s Real Room does just that – and exceptionally well, might I add. The beachside suburb of Glenelg is the setting for this lovely abode, the home of Creative Sam Cannell. What’s not to love about a space that’s so light, bright, and gives a gentle nod to a coastal vibe without a literal item in sight!?

fancy a new oz design cushion? win one!

Screen Shot 2013-09-13 at 8.10.44 PM

I need a cushion intervention. There, I said it. I’m big enough to admit that I have a hungry obsession for them that shows no signs of slowing down! Cushions are the easiest way to breathe new life into a space, and they’re my first go-to item when my room looks tired. How glorious then that Oz Design and I are teaming up to have you win one (I’m going to live vicariously through you because my couch is refusing to allow another cushion on).

how to diagnose and cure HPA (homewares purchase anxiety)

P1130353

Homewares purchase anxiety hits without warning. You’re wandering through the store with a burning desire to get something new for your space. Out of nowhere, you spot the ‘marked down’ sign.  A state of ecstasy begins within. Then, you see the cushion from the latest issue of Real Living. Hold the phones; isn’t that the print from last nights episode of Selling Houses Australia? And WTF – is that clock seriously only $19.95!? As you start to get overwhelmed with too many glorious options, you spot the eager sales assistant approaching. And moments later, they’re bagging up $200 worth of homewares you’re not sure you needed.

hue how-to: break the rules and mix colour

Shot_5_tif_86518

Rules are such a snooze. You know, blue and green should never be seen and all that jazz. Sure, the colour wheel does dictate that certain hues are complimentary while others are not ideal together, but there are ways you can ignore these rules when it comes to home decor. It can all work wonderfully if you keep a few simple concepts (not rules) in mind. Let me get on my tutorial glasses for this educational experience.

de-clutter ideas to make your spring clean easy

Screen Shot 2013-09-02 at 2.04.45 PM

Finally Spring has arrived! Sadly or wonderfully (depending on which way you look at it), it’s also the time of year for a Spring clean! Thankfully I have TheHome senior stylist Marjorie Silva on hand to give her advice on how to de-clutter your space and add some sprucing up for Spring! After the hoarding I’ve undertaken this winter I am well and truly in need of some direction!
