where is all the purple decor? (my homage to this polarising hue)

lilabras

I dare you to open your latest homewares mag and find a spread – or even a page – that’s laden with purple. I’ve tried this and I can assure you it’s no easy task. It seems this misunderstood hue is often left behind when it comes to interior styling – and having spent time last week looking at colour psychology, purple’s omission from the mags has been playing on my mind. Today I’m paying homage to this hue and giving you a little inspiration to use it in your own home (and figuring out why it has been so neglected).

photo diary: my morning at grand designs live

P1140334

This weekend saw the landing of Grand Designs Live in Darling Harbour and I had to jet on down to take in all the interior and gardening goodness. And goodness there was; the place was full of local Creatives doing some amazing things with furniture, homewares and lighting in particular (well, there was loads more, but that’s what took my fancy). Read on to take a look at some of my fave stalls and moments – and feel free to share what you loved in the comments below!

chatting with sonia from life love and hiccups – my funniest interview yet!

Screen Shot 2013-10-15 at 9.38.25 AM

If it’s one blog I turn to for a good chuckle, it’s Life Love and Hiccups; the work of Sydney-sider Sonia Stackhouse, whose love of online shopping and vodka strikes a real chord with my liver. A mum and wife who celebrates both the triumphs and hiccups in life, I simply had to take five with this lovely lady for my most hilarious interview yet. We discuss everything from picking a favourite child, pitching a show to Foxtel and taking out Tara Dennis.

Well, now you can witness her interior design and styling genius when you attend one of her upcoming decorating workshops! must-have rugs: chevron, stripes and diamonds

20130913_TW_FabHabitat2087

Rugs are the new cushions if you ask me; they’re so affordable nowadays that you can swap them around at a moment’s notice when you tire of your old one (unlike when they swapped old Pippa for new Pippa on Home and Away – that was just too big a change for me to handle). The added bonus with smaller, lightweight rugs like the ones above is that you can layer them for a relaxed and casual vibe that still packs a visual punch (and you can score them at a discounted price – read on!)

my interview with belle’s neale whitaker

Screen Shot 2013-09-03 at 10.00.07 AM

As Editor-in-Chief at Belle, Neale Whitaker is at the forefront of what’s hot in interior design. And although he has witnessed thousands of homes grace the pages of the popular mag, he admitted in a recent issue that not every home is to his taste. “…that was a controversial thing to say,” he tells me. I caught up with this industry heavyweight and The Block judge to discuss the magazine, his decor secret shame and his take on Christmas decorating.

review: 100 ways to happy chic your life

P1120960

If my mother told me tomorrow that I was adopted, I think I’d book a redeye flight to New York to declare myself Jonathan Adler‘s brother. We seem to share the same adoration of colour, a love of quirk, a fondness of humour and a partiality to a scatter cushion or seven. It’s in his latest release – 100 Ways to Happy Chic Your Life – he cements himself as my ultimate go-to guy for out-of-the-box home decor inspiration. So, we may not be brothers, but we are at the very least cut from the same cross-stitch!

a chat with interior designer kelly ross

Screen Shot 2013-07-22 at 9.28.02 PM

As the creative director behind The Gentry – a design business that has undertaken a slew of well-known interiors projects – Kelly Ross also happens to be my teacher at the International School of Colour and Design. Having travelled for 13 years as a set, props and scenic creative for theatre, she’s had quite an artistic journey so far. I sat down for a chat with this Sydney-based Creative to find out more about her business, her role at iscd and what she considers to be her finest moment.

why i’m smitten with design biz visual imprint

Screen Shot 2013-08-09 at 9.56.57 PM

It was a wake-up call moment following the 2009 Black Saturday Bushfires that led to partners Suzi Kerr and Denis Spooner creating their design business, Visual Imprint. “You realise that life can be cut short at any moment,” Suzi tells me. “Best to spend our time on this planet doing something you really enjoy”. That event, along with Suzi’s love for interior decor and Denis’ passion for printing, spawned a creative journey the two are now enjoying immense success on.
