It’s safe to say that Mr Jason Grant has played an integral part in Aussie styling for years. Having worked with the likes of Inside Out, Real Living, Freedom, Murobond and a host of other Aussie brands, he now adds author to his CV with his latest book release A Place Called Home. I caught up with this stylist extraordinaire to talk about his own home, his new paint range and how he rose to fame.

on the set of an inside out photo shoot

bts-sammadamcooper-9

If it’s one thing I’ve learnt being on set during a photo shoot, it’s that a tonne of chaos takes place to capture even the smallest moment on film. A photo shoot at Inside Out magazine is no different. And if you thought snapping models presented its challenges, try working with a flowers that droop the day of the shoot! It’s all in a day’s work for stylist Vanessa Colyer Tay, who filled me in on creating this story for the September issue of Inside Out.

why i’m smitten with design biz visual imprint

Screen Shot 2013-08-09 at 9.56.57 PM

It was a wake-up call moment following the 2009 Black Saturday Bushfires that led to partners Suzi Kerr and Denis Spooner creating their design business, Visual Imprint. “You realise that life can be cut short at any moment,” Suzi tells me. “Best to spend our time on this planet doing something you really enjoy”. That event, along with Suzi’s love for interior decor and Denis’ passion for printing, spawned a creative journey the two are now enjoying immense success on.

a squiz at the september issue of inside out

Screen Shot 2013-08-06 at 7.47.28 PM

My obsession with clocks was taken to new heights when issue 106 of Inside Out Magazine hit my mailbox this week (you really need to get a subscription!). The styling from Jessica Hanson and photography by Amanda Prior in the shot above is a clear standout from the September issue. The hard part? Choosing which clock is my fave! And on a side note, how cool is that wall pattern?

what goes into styling a photo shoot?

Screen Shot 2013-07-27 at 4.09.50 PM

I’d always known that styling a photo shoot wasn’t easy, but it wasn’t until I hit Temple & Webster HQ a few weeks back and saw the team in action that I realised just how laborious it can be. I sat down with T&W’s Head of Styling, Jessica Bellef, to get the scoop on what she and Senior Stylist Adam Powell deal with daily when they’re putting together their glorious homewares shoots.

review: abigail ahern’s decorating with style

P1120941

Alert the presses, Creatives; I have been converted! Once a lover of all things light and bright in interiors (you know, sunshine and lollipops, a place where it’s always spring), this release from style maven Abigail Ahern has given me a wondrous appreciate of interiors with mood. The pictures within this release are somewhat dark, very alluring and quite unlike anything I’ve  laid eyes upon in an interiors book (and you know I have many).

this week’s top seven creative finds

P1130156

1 | It was Mumma Creatives 60th birthday on Saturday, so I pulled my craft box out (yes, I am a 31 year old man with a craft box!) and made some personalised gift tags using paint card samples from Bunnings. I love using these cards because the range of colours is just amazing. With the help of a balloon-shaped hole punch I got from Lincraft, I made my own little gift tags that are very one-of-a-kind. What do you think?

become a part of the life creative’s real rooms

p1070428

The very reason I started this blog was to connect like-minded creatives and showcase amazing spaces – not just the high end ones you see in the magazines (because let’s face it; nobody lives in the magazines). With this in mind, I present a glorious new initiative that you can get involved in, that’ll show the world the breathtaking nooks and crannies of your home in all their styled glory. I call it ‘Real Rooms’ – and here’s how you can get involved!

temple & webster style workshop at iscd

P1120560

It’s safe to say that nothing will keep me away from my love of styling. When I was offered the chance to attend the Temple & Webster styling workshop at the International School of Colour and Design on Saturday, not even the wet and wild Sydney weather could hold me back. Not only did I walk away with the tools to complete my living room look, but I got to meet Temple & Webster superstar (and my personal interiors icons) Karen McCartney. Cue the crazy fan moment!

achieve a coastal vibe – no sand required!

Achieving a coastal vibe is all about the right tone and texture

I have to be honest with you, Creatives; I have been into homes where I have seen things I cannot un-see. You know, sand in bottles, shells in jars, Gone Fishin’ signs; all of the things that people thought you needed to create a coastal vibe. Thankfully, design therapy has taught me that you don’t have to be so literal with your decor. If you’re looking to channel a coastal vibe, it’s simply a matter of using tone and texture – with a little accessorising – no sand in sight!
