the spray paint that’s going to change my life

P1140230

So I got invited to a media event today to take a look at Rust-Oleum‘s new range of spray paints, 2X Ultra Cover. Granted, I had not heard of Rust-Oleum before, so I was going in with a bit of a blank, Miss Teen type look on my face. Once I was at the event, though, and saw what I could do with these spray paints, I wanted to run through the place taking every colour available and yelling at security “Back off – I’m a blogger!!!!”.

upcycled designer furniture from ginger elliott

Screen Shot 2013-08-24 at 12.46.46 PM

For Nicole Elliott & Sarah Hargrave – the founders of design business Ginger Elliott – finding unique furniture pieces to upcycle is a giddy experience. “Quite often we turn heads, as we can’t contain ourselves with excitement,” they tell me. “The thrill of finding the piece starts the creative process”. And what a process it is. Just looking at some of their creations is giving me heart palpitations (in the best way possible!).

tips and tricks for second hand shopping

P1110303

I’ve said it before; you’re either into refurbing furniture or you find the concept of taking someone else’s castoffs and making them your own downright creepy. I happen to be in the former category and I’m in good company; stylists everywhere are getting into the notion of upcycling pieces for interior design purposes. Personally, I find it’s all about knowing what to look for and what to bear in mind when you’re scouting the second-hand stores. On with my tips…

industrial dream in the clock hotel’s new courtyard

P1100615

It’s safe to say I’ve been going to The Clock Hotel for many years. In fact, my partner and I had our second date there (cue the dreamy, romantic music), so it’s more than cemented itself as one of Surry Hills’ definitive go-to destinations for not only myself but my circle, too. For a long time, locals knew that an arvo at The Clock was all about the upstairs balcony. But hold the phones, creatives, because the downstairs area has had a major revamp and it’s an industrial dream I never want to leave (what balcony?!).

creative finds | this easter weekend’s top seven

Now I’m never one to complain about a four day weekend, but I was gutted to discover that so many homewares stores were closed (first world problem!). Not that it slowed me down entirely; I just packed a lot into the two days the stores were trading and got to a few bars in-between (all for research, you see).

1 | The Clock Hotel just underwent a killer renovation and I had to go to scope out the new-and-improved decor (it had nothing to do with wanting a wine!). These mind-blowing orange and teal industrial stools – clustered together to make a faux table – were just too good and reminded me of my industrial coffee table. I have an entire tour of the hot and happening new Clock coming up this week!

fancy making a brekkie in bed tray?

P1060574

Surely I am not the only one who goes to Spotlight (or any craft store) for no purpose other than to see what you can make with their current stock. Case in point – this brekkie in bed tray – which started off as plain, MDF-style wood and ended up looking rather cute!

this roadside find became my bedside table

P1070202P1070420

I think there are two types of people in the world; people who think that finding furniture on the roadside to refurb is dirty, disgusting and the things horror films are made of – and then, there’s me. Call me crazy, call it gross, but I love nothing more than slamming on the car brakes when I see a piece on the side of the road and hauling it back home to do over. Case in point – this amazing now-bedside table!

i refurbed a second-hand stool

IMG_3063P1080385

Turning this $15 stool that i found at Vinnies into a cute piece for my place was easier than I thought it would be. And surprisingly, it was pretty cheap too. I’m absolutely in love with this stool now (should there be a fire this might be the first thing I take). And the best part, when I get sick of the fabric on top it’s a cinch to change up! Check out how it all came together…
