real room: cathy elsmore’s lovely living room

Cathy Elsmore-6

You all responded so well to Cathy Elsmore’s glorious before-and-after boudoir that I had to do a bit of a back-by-popular-demand scenario and show you another room in her home. This time around, I’m showcasing her lovely living room, which sports an on-trend black, yellow and white colour palette and is filled with my favourite things – cushions! Read on for more photos and Cathy’s vision for the room.

this week’s top seven creative finds

P1140297

1 | My class at iscd had to design Christmas cards for one of our assignments this week gone by and this was my submission. They’re meant to be cards for a corporate client, which I assume means there should be a more serious, less-fun tone to the design, but I still think this passes. I love the colours and the mosaic-inspired look I’ve gone for here – and it remains festive without being too OTT. What do you think?

personalise your own ikea serving tray

P1120989

I’ve received some glorious kudos this week from both the team at IKEA and you divine Creatives for the living room makeover I performed over the weekend (shucks and thanks!). One of the stars of the show was this personalised serving tray that I took from birch wood to black and white stripe. The process is really straight-forward but I think the results are pretty smashing. Here’s how to pimp your own tray if you’re in the mood for a quick project!

numbers in a box frame = personalised art

P1060331

I love to personalise, because let’s face it; anyone can go out to the stores and buy a mass-produced piece of art (snore!). If it’s one design trend I am all over like a rash, it’s the concept of making your space truly one of a kind by using sentimental moments from your own life to really carve out your home’s identity. Case in point: putting numbers in a box frame to commemorate those special occasions!

an easy ikea mood board makeover

P1060424

I’m a big believer in personalisation. I don’t want something that everyone else has. Thankfully, there are very easy ways to take mass-produced items and make them your own. This mood board makeover is a classic example. The original magnet board is from IKEA. It’s fine as it is, of course (if that’s your thing), but I have far too much fabric not to put it to good use. And I know IKEA would be all for it. So, here we go. Get your creative hat on and let’s do this!

creative finds | this weekend’s top six

IMG_2495

1 | Easter is just around the corner and Bed Bath ‘N’ Table is inundated with a range of stock that is worthy of diving into (in a purely figuratively way, of course). These rabbits, complete with their own little egg holder, are beyond cute. I’m hoping to get back there soon to photography the entire range so you can see it in all its glory!

creative finds | this weekend’s top six

While the people of Sydney were going gaga over Mardi Gras this weekend, I was – predictable – caught up in my very own parade, across  local homewares stores!

1 | Granted, I’m not huge on orange, but there’s something kinda breathtaking about these awesome mine and yours Home Republic text pillow covers from Adairs; the clouds, the chevron back pillows, the pop of aqua. It’s the most playful bed I’ve seen in a while and I’m big enough to admit that I want to burn my current bedspread so I have a valid reason to get this one.

i made my very own cushion

P1090527

I finally made the treck out to Mum’s place this week and got to work on stage two of my sewing machine training – making an actual cushion. I did have visions of needles going through fingers and a blood-stained cushion adorning my couch. But surprisingly, the end result was actually nice!

i went a little crazy with decorative paper

P1070468

Once upon a time, a stationery addict discovered that craft stores stocked sheets of decorative, textured paper. Once this discovery was made, covering items around the home with paper got a little out of control…

fancy making a brekkie in bed tray?

P1060574

Surely I am not the only one who goes to Spotlight (or any craft store) for no purpose other than to see what you can make with their current stock. Case in point – this brekkie in bed tray – which started off as plain, MDF-style wood and ended up looking rather cute!
